Playa de Rodas has been selected by the Guardian as the best beach in the world…
This is with no doubt one of the best beaches in northern Spain. It usually comes in the top 10 in most rankings. The beach of Rodas is located in the islands Cies, a group of paradise-like islands that are protected due to their flora and fauna. This is one of the best areas in Spain to enjoy bird-watching.
Playa de Rodas is located on the Isla de Cies, is shaped like a shell and features spectacular turquoise color water, and it is this color easily one of the prettiest beaches of Galicia.
It is linked by a small portion of sand to Figueiras beach, another Galician treasure.
The Cíes Islands are part of the Islas Atlánticas National Park and are only accessible by boat that you will have to catch in Vigo.
The Beach of Rodas links the two largest islands in Cies: Faro and Monteagudo. Locals refer to this beach as the “tropical beach”, due to the fantastic color of its waters. But this should not mislead you, temperatures in Galicia are not Caribbean-like! But the place is with no doubt the closest to paradise you can get in Europe.
The best way to get to Islas Cies and this beach is from Vigo, from where daily trips depart to the Cies Islands. The amount of tourists that can make it to the island every day is limited. We strongly recommend booking tickets well before your trip to the islands, especially during the high season.
Free camping is not permitted and there is no hotel either. There is however a family-friendly campsite which is open during certain times of the year.
The Islas Cies and the island of Rodas are amongst the best places to enjoy bird-watching in Spain. Relaxing on the beach and enjoying the color of the sea and the birds is a great way to spend a day! The main species you will be able to enjoy are yellow seagulls and cormorants. From the beach, up to 4 hiking trails can be followed and you will find posts from where you will be able to enjoy bird watching.
There are private chartered boats that will take you to the islands, but the most practical and safe way to enjoy your visit is with one of the following ferries. We include different options to Cies islands, and not all of them will be ok to visit Rodas beach.
A trip to Northern Spain offers many things you would typically not expect of Spain. The North offers a deep contrast with Southern Spain. Green landscapes, less tourists, fantastic gastronomy….
