Best shows to enjoy Flamenco in Seville

We share below 5 great shows with special offers. All 5 are included in our list of top best shows in Seville

Baraka Sala Flamenca

This tablao is located in Triana, at the other side of the San Telmo river and at the heart of flamenco culture (though just at 15 minutes walk from the Real Alcazar). Baraka means charism in arab language, and this is what you can expect to find at Baraka. This is a mid-sized show. The setting is cozy and offers the attractive of mudejar style architecture. At this show there are typically four performers: a guitarist, a singer and two dancers. This flamenco show is highly recommended if you prefer rather intimate venues. Dinner is not offered and the show only runs on weekends. The price is very reasonable for a show of this quality and size. Located at Calle Pureza 107.

El Arenal Tablao Flamenco

If you are looking for one of the closest possible quality show near the Cathedral, this is an excellent option for you. The show has been running for over 25 years and has a high reputation in Seville. This tablao flamenco is located in the are of El Arenal (this explains its name), between the Giralda and the Guadalquivir river, very close to the La Maestranza bull fighting ring. The famous flamenco dancer Curro velez opened El Arenal in 1975. At Arenal you can enjoy drinks, tapas dinner or a 3 course dinner besides the show. The food is more than acceptable (not always the case at similar shows). At Arenal you can expect some 10-15 performers. This is a very colourful and lively show. Its location makes it also very convenient (this may bring pros and cons along). The show is of high quality. Sometimes too touristic (due to the audience rather than to the show) Location: Calle Rodo, 7. Located at Calle Pureza 107.

El Palacio Andaluz

Palacio Andaluz organises shows in a theatre style venue. The location is that of a renovated warehouse. It provides with a large number of performers and a very lively show. On the negative side, you will get less feeling of proximity due to the theatre style venue (versus a tablao in which seats are closer to the stage). The show is located on the “other side of the Guadalquivir” river, right after the Barqueta bridge, not far from La Macarena church. The venue is located in one of the pabillions built for the 1992 Universal exhibition in Seville and which implied the complete renovation of the city. Shows at El palacio Andaluz have won several national flamenco awards and cover a wide range of styles: bulerías, fandango, sevillanas. There is an exhibition space that focuses on flamenco culture with objects, costumes, and photographs related to flamenco history, artists, and culture. The show is organized with a dinner option. Location: Calle Matematicos Rey Pastor y Castro, 4. At Arenal you can enjoy drinks, tapas dinner or a 3 course dinner besides the show. Casa de la Memoria

This is one of our favorite options in Seville to enjoy Flamenco: a very intimate show, it takes place at an intimate theatre. This is a flamenco cultural center that produces temporary exhibitions and shows, and that also runs a permanent show. The artists on the show are all excellent and the overall experience is very intimate and magic. Location: Calle Cuna 6.

Tablao Alvarez Quintero

If you are looking for an “intimate2 flamenco show very close to the Cathedral in seville, the tablao Alvarez Qintero is probably for you. With three to five performers, this is an intimate flamenco show in Seville. The venue, located at at XVIIIth century house, used to be the house of the family who operates the show (a family involved in flamenco in Seville for decades) can host less than 100 people. This is one of the few shows where guests may have the chance, at the end of the show, to participate and ask their questions and enjoy small tips and recommendations (though this may not happen on all shows) Location: C/ Alvarez Quintero 48 Location: Calle Cuna 6.

Flamenco in Seville – introduction

Flamenco is a Spanish icon, especially in Andalusia. It is now totally clear where, how, and even where flamenco originated. But one thing is for sure: Seville is one of the capitals of Flamenco and a city where many locals enjoy shows or just drinks and music.

Not all Flamenco shows are suited for everybody. Some shows are meant for experts, others specialize in only one sort of flamenco, etc. Locals will not enjoy many occasions the flamenco shows designed for tourists. They may eventually consider they try to cover too many things in a short time. At the same time, if a person that is not an expert in flamenco visits one of the peñas on a day in which the show is not varied, may consider Flamenco is someone boring…  It is impossible to please everybody all the time!

In this article we are going to explain the differences amongst the different types of places where flamenco can be enjoyed. We will provide the best options, addresses, and our recommendations to ensure you book the flamenco show that best matches your expectations.

Different Places Where Flamenco is Played in Seville

You can generally expect to find flamenco at four different types of places: peñas, tablaos, cultural centres, and bars. Let´s cover each of them briefly before presenting the alternatives you have to enjoy flamenco in Seville:

  • Peñas: A peña is by definition a private group of people. Peñas are very common in Spain in soccer. In flamenco, a peña is a group of people who enjoy flamenco and meet regularly. You can think of it as a very popular version of a club. There are no less than 80 peñas flamencas in Seville! And each of them can gather around 200 people. Peñas are places where people gather to talk about flamenco and other things. This is not a place for professionals, and you could expect performances of young people, the elderly, or professionals who feel like joining that night (because they continue to be part of the peña) and perform without the constraints of a show.
  • Tablaos: A Tablao literally means a stand made of wood. The name tablao flamenco refers today to places (clubs or theatres) where flamenco shows are organized. This is the type of show tourists typically go to. Some locals may consider them less spontaneous than what is typically enjoyed at a peña. This is true, but at the same time, it makes all sense. Attendants to a peña visit every week, so they would not enjoy a show that portrays the fundamentals of flamenco: they have simply enjoyed it too many times! Flamenco shows at Tablaos can today be booked online and the price is the same as what you would expect to pay at the Tablao while at the same time you secure a place. Tablaos typically provide a drink with your ticket, and the option to order more, and some of them also provide the option to enjoy tapas or 3-course dinners.
  • Cultural centers: These are the rarest places. These places are privately or publically funded institutions that frequently run programs dedicated to flamenco and its culture. Fundación Cajasol is a good example of this type of institution.
  • Bars: Some bars in Seville have small areas where flamenco singers or guitar players perform. This typically only happens at night. Do not expect the flamenco show you have in mind though.
