Tomatina in Buñol

Tomatina in Buñol

La Tomatina Fiesta in Buñol

The tomato fight is celebrated each year on the last Wednesday of August in Buñol - one of Valencia’s municipalities. The tomato fight goes from 11 to 12 in the morning.

The history of the tomato festival starts in 1945 where a group of young kids waited for the beginning of a local celebration near a vegetable stand and began throwing them until the police put a stop to the battle.

The fun had on the first “Tomatina” lead to people bringing the tomatoes from home for the battle the following year. Like the previous year, the authorities intervened and this continued for the next 5 years even though it was specifically prohibited.

Years later, after multiple years of detention and the town still defending the tomato fight, it was established as an official celebration in the 60s. It became known around the country and eventually in the 80s, around the world. In 2002, the Tomatina de Buñol celebration was named as an international tourist interest celebration.

Even though visiting the city is free, if you want to participate in the tomato festival, you need to pay 10 euros to access the throwing zone. You should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and make sure to have fun while following some of these basic rules for your own security.

On top of the exfoliating treatment that the Tomatina gives you, other parallel activities are celebrated, for example, the kids Tomatina. It is celebrated the Saturday before - serving as a warm up for the real Tomatina.

For the ones who want to continue the celebration during the night, the Tomatina Sound Festival has recently been born. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays you will get to listen to some of the best Spanish and international groups to fully live the experience and arrive at Tomatina without any sleep.

If you are going to spend a few days, you should take time to visit the outskirts or Buñol because its castles and views are perfect for excursions and mountain biking for those who love the outdoors.  If you prefer, you can also go camping in the El Planell area.
