Hotel Relais & Chateaux Hotel Orfila – Review
The Hotel Orfila is located in the Chamberí neighborhood of Madrid, 200 meters from the Alonso Martinez and Colón metro stations.
The hotel is housed within a XIX century palace and features an elegant restaurant and tea room. We love the entrance and lobby located in the old carriage access. Iron lamps, wooden furniture, marble, delicate wall moldings… Many details have been preserved from the old building to ensure the experience of staying here is unique and takes to you an updated luxury version of old Madrid.
Rooms
The rooms at the Orfila are large and elegant and feature antique furniture. There are only 32 rooms at this luxury boutique hotel. Rooms are well isolated but if you are a light sleeper, you may prefer to sleep with views over the patio.
The decoration is in a classical style that matches the hotel´s character. If you enjoy minimalist, super modern hotels you will probably find these rooms rather bland.
Services
The hotel restaurant, the Jardín de Orfila, run by Michelin star chef Mario Sandoval, specializes in local Mediterranean cuisine.
The hotel’s tea room looks out onto the terrace and the Orfelia gardens. The Hotel also offers several private halls for events and meetings.
Location
The hotel Orfila is located a tree-lined street. There are bars and restaurants in the area and one of the most fascinating art galleries in Madrid: the Sorolla museum.
Prado, the Thyssen and Reina Sofía Museums are 25 minutes away on foot and the Retiro Park is just 1km away. Colón square is 400 meters from the hotel and the Bernabéu soccer stadium and the Serrano district are 5 minutes away by car.
Overall review
We love the XIX century mansion where the hotel sits. This is not a hotel for lovers of minimalism. The hotel rooms boast elegant classic interiors that make you feel you stay in Madrid, but a Madrid of a long time ago. Having said this, the hotel is very comfortable and the rooms are super spacious.
This hotel is for you if you are ready to sacrifice on some services like wellness center and prefer to stay in style at a small boutique hotel of 35 rooms, with charm and a super romantic atmosphere from the old-world charm.
One last comment on location: the hotel is not located at the heart of the tourist attractions. This is an area of the city where people live and work. You would need to walk some 20 minutes to reach some of the main attractions. Getting to the tourist center is however easy with public transportation and a taxi would not take you more than 5 minutes.
