History
The museum was inaugurated in 1972 by the minister of tourism Alfredo Sánchez Bella. A great deal of research went into creating the statues and the scenes they were placed in. Experts (some of which were Oscar winners) where brought in and consulted: sculptors, make-up artist, costume designers, decorators and illumination experts all participated in the design of the museum.
The first statue to be completed was that of Christopher Columbus and the collection has been slowly growing over the years and now features over 450 different statues.
The collection is divided into different categories: historical figures, both Spanish and international (Phillip the IV, Columbus, Barack Obama, etc.), Artists (Pablo Neruda, Picasso, Dali, etc.) Scientist (Ramon y Cajal, Margarita Salas, etc.) entertainers including athletes (Cristiano Ronaldo, George Clooney, etc.), Horror (Drácula, Frankenstein, etc.) and the kids section (The Simpsons, pirates of the Caribbean, etc.).
Many of the more contemporary figures are actually dressed with clothes from the actual person that they represent
