Another interesting part of Park Güell is “Turó de les tres creus” – the highest point of the zone. Although Gaudí wanted to build a chapel here, it was not possible because prehistoric remains were found here. You can enjoy the impressive view of the park and Barcelona from this area and take the typical photo that all tourists try to look for.

Who designed Park Güell?

The park was designed by the architect Antoni Gaudí, the greatest exponent of Catalan modernism, commissioned by the businessman Eusebi Güell. The park was built between 1900 and 1914, and it was inaugurated as a public park in 1926.

Güell Park is a reflection of Gaudí’s artistic prowess. It is the magnum opus of his naturalistic period (first decade of the 20th century), a period in which the architect perfected his personal style, through inspiration in the organic forms of nature, to which put into practice a whole series of new structural solutions originated in his in-depth analysis of ruled geometry.

Park Güell displays all of Gaudí’s architectural genius and puts into practice many of his innovative structural solutions that would be emblematic of his organicist style and that would culminate in the Sagrada Familia.

Highlights of Park Güell

The park is over 17 hectares large and features an amazing otherworldly design. Most of the architecture is decorated with the iconic mosaics associated with Gaudi made from colorful ceramic pieces.

The park is built on a 196 Ft (60 m) slope known as Carmel Hill, where the garden is located. This upwards trek is meant to symbolize the path of spiritual elevation. At the top, you will find the “Monumento al Calvario”, a promontory located on the highest part of the park. Here you will enjoy the best views in the whole park.

At the center of the park is a large square that has a large bench that runs along the plaza, measuring 360 Ft (110 m). The square is shaped like a long snake and is decorated with colorful mosaics.

Also within the Park Güell you will find the Gaudí House Museum. This house was once the residence of the Gaudi family between 1906 and 1925. The house contains a collection of furniture and other objects designed by the famous architect.
