Many of our customers enjoying our wine tours in Spain ask us about the most expensive wines in Spain and also how prices in Spain compared to other countries in the world.
The price of wine is a very complex matter and France clearly leads on this. Many rich, important, and famous people had French wines as their favorite wines in the past, and this plays a clear role in pricing.
But there are many other factors. France was historically very connected to the United Kingdom. Names like Eleanor of Aquitane come to our mind for instance. Bourdeaux and its harbor played a critical role in the commerce of wine through history, and this control could partially explain why the region´s wines are far more expensive than wines East of Bordeaux.
If we look at the case of Spain, the isolation caused by the Dictatorship of Franco did not help in the establishment of strong, luxury wine brands, but many other factors explain also why Spanish wines are not on top of this list. Having a very affluent population near a wine region is a clear example. Napa Valley is very close to Silicon Valley…
