Gasronomic Getaway at Parador Cangas de Onís

Description
Itinerary
Map

This getaway includes accommodation, breakfast and a meal or dinner in the old monastery of Villanueva de Cangas. Cangas de Onís is one of the most important places of the Middle Ages since the court of the first Kingdom of the Reconquista, the kingdom of Asturias, was settled here. The monastery, that was declared a national monument at the beginning of the 20th century, is the Parador Nacional de Cangas. This Parador is one of the places with the most history of Asturias plus Northern Spain and certainly the best place for a luxury gastronomic experience

Highlights

Discover the secrets of Don Pelayo and visit Covadonga - the place of worship and the origin of the Christian Reconquest on the Umayyad Caliphate of Damascus. This getaway allows you to get to know the true ins and outs of Asturias and one of the most charming areas in Spain. Cangas de Onís was already once occupied by the Romans times and thanks to this we can see a Roman bridge that crosses the River Sella. Not everything is about history; gastronomy plays a fundamental role in Cangas and we therefore advise you to try some of the most typical dishes of the region with your included menu.

Getaway at PARADOR of CANGAS de ONÍS. What to do?

A getaway in Cangas de Onís means carrying out a multitude of activities related to: history, gastronomy, culture and nature. Let's start with the historic activities; it must be said that this particular Parador Hotel is one of the buildings which has the most history to it in the town as it was the formerly monastery of San Pedro de Villanueva. This Romanesque-style Benedictine monastery is one of the best examples of Asturian-Romanesque architecture. It was built by Alfonso I, the son-in-law of Don Pelayo, originally as a church then became a monastery centuries later. We recommend a visit to the church.

In the town of Cangas de Onís, the most famous monument is the city's Roman Bridge. Although it is called the Roman Bridge, it is not true that it dates back to this time as the one that stands today was built by the Castilian king Alfonso XI. It is referred to as “Roman” since it joins the Roman road on both sides of the Sella.
We must also mention the Church of Santa Maria in Cangas, which stands out for its curious pyramid-shaped belfry and the Church of the Holy Cross that dates back to the S VIII Century.
Relatively close you will find the Sanctuary of Covadonga with the basilica and the Holy Cave in which the Hermitage is located.
Additionally, you can visit Cabrales – an area located nearby where the most famous cheese of Asturias is made (at the foot of the Picos de Europa).
In addition to everything previously mentioned, the list of splendid things you can do while on your getaway at the Parador in Cangas de Onís continues.
