GETAWAY AT THE PARADOR DE BAIONA. WHAT TO DO?
The Baiona Parador is located on the top of a small peninsula - a perfect location for views of the sea. In Baiona, besides being able to visit the surroundings of the Parador which was once a fortress, there are many other things to do and see both in the town and surrounding areas.
The Port of Baiona is one of the most beautiful places in the town and that is why it always has many visitors strolling along the docks. One of the most interesting attractions to visit in the port is the replica of one of the caravels that left for America on the first trip of Columbus - the Pinta. After the accidental discovery of America, Baiona was the first city to know what was found since it was the port of docking after the long journey. Today, thanks to this reconstruction, you can find out more about the discovery and what changed in Spanish culture and gastronomy.
The historical center of Baiona dates back to the Caravela Pinta's return to Spain (XV century), like most of the main buildings. Although it is true that the history of the city begins centuries ago, highlighting the Fueros (old medieval rights and privileges) granted by Leon’s King Alfonso IX who also created the University of Salamanca.
Among the religious buildings, the ones to highlight are: Collegiate of Baiona (Santa Maria de Baiona) built in Romanesque style and the Convent of the Dominicans built in Renaissance style. The civil architecture worth mentioning is the Fortress of Monterreal (Parador) and the Romanesque Bridge of A Ramallosa which crosses the River Miñor, already on the outskirts of the city.
Furthermore, on the outskirts you will also find the Celtic settlement of Castro de Santa Trega. We also recommend taking the Baiona La Guarda road, ideal for visiting this site. On this tour you can stop at the Monastery of Oia or at the Silleiro Lighthouse to see one of the most beautiful viewpoints of the Atlantic.
You cannot miss visiting a winery when in this area. It has many exceptional wineries which are ideal for visits and tastings. You can find all this and much more with this getaway in Baiona.
